Welfare Check on Children
- General Well-being:
- How is the child feeling today? We ask the child directly to gauge their mood and health and report accordingly.
- Are there any physical or emotional concerns you or the child have? We observe for signs of distress or discomfort and report accordingly.
- Physical Health:
- Does the child have any visible injuries or health issues? We observe for bruises, cuts, or signs of neglect such as poor hygiene and report accordingly.
- Is the child up-to-date with medical appointments and vaccinations? We enquire about recent doctor visits and health care and report accordingly.
- Living Conditions:
- Can you describe the child’s living environment? We observe and report the cleanliness, safety, and suitability of the home.
- Does the home have adequate food, clothing, and shelter for the child? We enquire and observe that the basic needs are met and report accordingly.
- Caregiver Interaction:
- How does the child interact with their caregivers? We observe the quality of the relationship and communication and report accordingly.
- Are there any concerns regarding the caregiver’s behavior or attitude towards the child? We look for signs of neglect or abuse and report accordingly.
- School and Socialization:
- Is the child attending school regularly and performing well? We ask about attendance and academic progress and report accordingly.
- Does the child have friends or engage in social activities? We check for signs of social isolation or difficulty interacting with peers and report accordingly.
- Safety Concerns:
- Are there any safety hazards in the home or surroundings? We look for any potential risks such as unsafe living conditions or exposure to harmful situations and report accordingly.
- Has the child ever mentioned feeling unsafe or scared? We ask if the child has expressed fear or concerns about their environment and report accordingly.
- Emotional and Behavioural Observations:
- Has the child shown any changes in behaviour or mood recently? We ask the carer if there have been changes in sleeping, eating, or social behaviour and report accordingly.
- Does the child seem withdrawn, anxious, or unusually quiet? We ask the carer and attempt to assess emotional well-being and any signs of distress and report accordingly.
- Parent/Caregiver Questions:
- How do you feel about your child’s well-being and development? We Gauge the caregiver’s perspective and concerns and report accordingly.
- What support or resources do you think might be helpful for your family? We ask and attempt to identify any needs for additional support or services and report accordingly.
- Emergency Preparedness:
- Does the child know what to do in case of an emergency? We ask if the child has basic knowledge of safety procedures including calling 000 and report accordingly.
- Are there any plans or contacts for emergencies if the caregiver is unavailable? We ask and check for emergency plans and alternative caregivers and report accordingly.
- Additional Considerations:
- Confidentiality: We ensure that all information gathered is kept confidential and used only for the purpose of assessing the child's well-being.
- Sensitivity: We approach the situation with empathy and understanding, especially when speaking with the child and caregivers.
- Documentation: We record observations and responses accurately to provide a comprehensive assessment for follow-up actions.
